Introduce Yourself/Tell About Yourself: Name’s Alex, I’m an Audio Engineer and Music Producer by trade out of my home in Lawton, Oklahoma. I run a studio called Studio 7-22 LLC and I’ve been doing music for quite a few years, but I’ve been doing it more professionally since about 2011. Music has always been a passion of mine, whether that be listening, recording, mixing, songwriting, you name it, I love everything about it!
I started making music not too long after I first heard my best friend’s brother start in his home studio when I was just a kid. They had a rap group called Notwal, that’s Lawton spelled backwards, representing the Shady 580. I’d hear the music going throughout the entire house from the garage over there and I was fascinated every time I got to go in there. Now mind you this was all when I was about 10 years old. Not long after that my brother, best friend and I were going to start our own music group. That never panned out because we never learned any musical instruments. Later in life we thought we’d try again a couple more times by making beats only in software, still no proficiency in musical instruments, but of course that never panned out. Fast Forward to 2011 when I bought my first pair of Studio Speakers and some software and started producing my own stuff. Then fast forward again to about 2015 when I started recording others, I’ve been doing music for others ever since.
What Inspires You Every day? : The thing, or rather person, that inspires me every single day of my life, is my wonderful fiance and love of my life. Everyday I wake up and get to see her, she lights up my life unlike anyone else.
What is some words of wisdom you live by?: “Why are you hitting yourself in the head with a hammer?…. Because it feels good when I stop…… Well, stupid, STOP HITTING YOURSELF WITH THE HAMMER!” -Dad RIP
What is your ultimate goal in life? : My Ultimate goal in life is to do what I love with music and be able to support a family while doing it. I want to be able to live where I want to and work with top-notch acts as well as one day have children.
How have you been during the pandemic and how has it affected you? : The Pandemic has affected me more than a little bit. I work a full-time job outside of my studio and we were all put on Work At Home duty. I’m not complaining because I do like being able to work at home and not have to worry about being 15 feet apart.
In my studio, I still get the occasional client coming through, but I do quite a bit of mixing and mastering work right now as well.
What is a message you would like to give others? : This is going to sound cliche, but do what you want in life! If you have a dream, chase it! Don’t let anything get in your way! You may have to have the ultimate goal in mind, but take the small steps each day to achieve the smaller goals that will lead you to the bigger ones than to the ultimate goal. One thing you still have to do is be smart about your goals.
What else would you like to tell others about you or your life?: Growing up, and still today, I’ve suffered from mental illness. It’s never easy, but it’s something I deal with day in and day out.
I’m very much an advocate for those who suffer from mental illness get the help they need. Whether that be the soldier suffering from PTSD from wartime, or a sibling suffering from schizophrenia hearing voices that taunt and torture them. They’re not crazy, they’re not insane, they’re ill. Their brain is sick and they don’t know how to fix it. With Mental Illness you can only treat the symptoms, not cure the disease.
Another thing to understand about mental illness is most people don’t understand what it is or how to see it, because it’s not something that’s shown on the outside. Most often it’s never seen until it’s too late or someone is in the midst of spiraling out of control. The people that suffer from illnesses such as depression, anxiety, bipolar, and schizophrenia are typically written off as “A crazy person” and not worth helping
One thing I have a problem with these days is people meming about mental illness. The whole thing about women posting memes of “I’m psychotic, watch out!” It’s one of those that make me go, you have no idea the definition of such things.
So if you have anyone in your family that’s hurting, down, suffering from depression or anxiety, talk to them, make sure they’re okay, let them know that they’re loved and cared for and make sure they feel they can talk to you without you throwing them under the bus.
